Laphroaig was founded by Donald and Alex Johnston as a farm distillery in 1812. By 1815 distilling had overtaken farming in its importance to the Johnston family. Laphroaig remained in the Johnston family until 1954, when the then proprieter, Ian Hunter, bequeathed it to Bessie Williamson who sold the company to Long John Distillers Ltd. part of the Seagar & Evans group. The business is now part of Allied Domecq and operated by Allied Distillers Ltd. Laphroaig is renowned for its individually flavoured single malts, which comes from a combination of sea air, high moss content, peat and the water from the Kilbride dam. The distillery is situated on a small bay near Port Ellen, Islay, Argyll. |
